Step 1 - How to
This tutorial will tell you how to change the color of the area around the canvas.  so if you have a 640x480 canvas, there is going to be by default a grey area around the canvas.  This can be changed which is useful to see what your design may look like on different surroundings, etc.

First select a color, then select the paint fill bucket, then shift click on the area around the canvas to change the color.  The default color is #999999 so if you want to change it back to default after doing this tutorial.  See screenshot for example of what this tutorial is explaining!
