Step 1 - Me Grimlock Say, "Read!"
Contigu-whu? This particular tutorial author has been fiddling in Photoshop for well over a decade and only in recent months have I learned what checking the contiguous option with the Magic Wand Tool even does. If you're one of them smartened types, carry on.

But if you're like me and never knew what this contiguous stuff meant, we're going to use our buddy Grimlock here to illustrate how this option works.

By default, the Contiguous option is checked on. When you click an area of color, the selection will be created around that shape and that shape alone.

Check that badboy OFF, and and the Magic Wand Tool will select every pixel close to that color. The tolerance will dictate how much color in the range of that pixel the wand will actually select. See? That easy! And useful too.
