Step 3 - Selections and Detail
Now carefully draw a selection with the lasso tool around the shape of the lip. With this selection, paint dark values on the edges of the lips. Go to Select>Inverse and now you'll be able to paint on the other side of the lines. Choose the layer with the line art and clean up the edges with the Eraser or Smudge tool. (Note: At this point I flattened all my layers to smudge the lines in with the tonal values to create a painterly feel, then created more layers on top of that for added detail in the following steps.)





Since we're on the line art layer we can start adding some more details with thin hard brush strokes that would require darkened areas like the corners and folds of the skin the lips have. Don't forget to remove your selection by pressing ctrl+D to deselect. While adding detail switch to the Smudge tool if you like a more blended look.
